domestic partners

In the modern world, all dreams are equal. That’s why Esurance recognizes all LGBT marriages and partnerships. If you and your partner are insured on the same policy, you could get the same great rate as married couples.

domestic partners could save on car insurance

Insurance companies generally offer lower rates to married couples. But what about same-sex couples and other LGBT partnerships? Shouldn't the same logic apply? At Esurance, we think it should. In fact, we were one of the very first car insurance companies to extend the married rate to the LGBT community (long before gay marriage was recognized nationwide). And we now offer it to our motorcycle insurance customers too.

Today, gay couples and other LGBT partnerships can get this rate in almost every state where we do business. In Florida and North Carolina, domestic partnerships are not approved by the departments of insurance. But same-sex marriage is legal in these states — as it will be in all states due to the Supreme Court's ruling — meaning gay couples in FL and NC can still get the married rate by tying the knot. Massachusetts does not allow the married rate for any couples. Registered domestic partners in California should choose "Domestic partner (registered)" to receive this rate. In New York, you must be married to qualify.

the married rate from esurance

So what does it mean to recognize all marriages? It simply means that even before the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage, Esurance went beyond what the law required in order to treat customers equally.

In every state where Esurance can give couples a married rate, we extend that rate to either married gay couples, domestic partners, or those in civil unions.

There are a few states that don't allow insurance companies to provide rates based on marital status — period — so, of course, in those states we're not able to extend the married rate to any of our customers.

But wherever we can, we extend this rate equally.

what the married rate means for you

It's simple. If same-sex couples or other LGBT partnerships are insured on the same policy, they can enjoy the same great car insurance savings as married couples.

Though the married rate is not a discount, it can provide a significant savings opportunity. Plus, if you and your partner own more than one car, you could also qualify for the Multi-Car discount. Just one more way to save money on insurance with Esurance.

how to sign up for the married rate

Gay couples and other LGBT partnerships have 3 options to get the Esurance married rate when getting their quote.

  • Select "domestic partner" as your marital status
  • If you're in a registered domestic partnership in California, select "domestic partner (registered)"
  • If you're married, just select "married"

The savings you receive from the married rate will be automatically applied to your car insurance quote.
