Are We There Yet? – Long-Distance Driving with Kids
As an auto insurance company, we’re concerned about your safety on the road.
Here are a few tips on how you can maintain your sanity and safety on the road
while keeping your auto insurance costs down. With a little planning, your road
trip can be one you remember fondly.
When most of us look back on family road trips, we usually remember the best
and worst highlights from the trips. More often than not, the worst moments
occurred during the long car ride. If you’re a parent, driving long distances
with children can be difficult.
The distractions that occur while you and your family are on the road could
lead to accidents. Even a minor fender bender can mean lost time on the road and
increase your auto insurance rates because you had to file an auto insurance claim.
Buckle Up
Make sure your passengers of all ages buckle up. This will help save them from
injury and will help you avoid traffic tickets and subsequent auto insurance
increases. Keep your kids happy by stocking up on snacks, juices, and treats.
Keep you and your driving partner happy by having plenty wipes on hand for the
inevitable spills and messes.
Make Frequent Stops
Take full advantage of rest stops, meals, and refueling stops as an important
opportunity for everyone in the car to use the restroom, stretch their legs,
and get a little exercise. Breaks in your drive will give everyone the opportunity
to reenergize and press on.
Whatever activities you decide to do in the car, make sure they don’t
distract the driver from the road. You don’t want to risk an accident with your
family in the car. An accident will delay your trip and, if you have to file an
auto insurance claim, could increase your auto insurance rates.
Rest Up
Encourage your children to take naps in the car by making small pillows and
blankets available. Along with making the journey pass much faster for the kids,
quiet time will give your driving partner ample time to rest up for his or her
turn at the wheel. Driving when tired can put you and your family at risk. No one
wants to have to deal with accidents or auto repairs and resulting auto insurance
claims.
Road trips give your family the opportunity to explore and spend time together.
