FAQ: Traveling With Auto Insurance Coverage
Will my auto insurance cover me for other modes of transportation?
Planning a trip? While you're away, you may need to find a means of getting around town. Whether you choose to sightsee by car, motorcycle, or moped, it's important to have auto insurance coverage if you plan on getting behind the wheel. When you're an Esurance policyholder, you're auto insurance coverage can often be applied to your rental car; however, it won't cover other vehicles, like mopeds or motorcycles.
If you carry liability, comprehensive, and collision coverage on your Esurance policy and you plan on renting a car in the U.S. or Canada, your Esurance coverage should transfer to your rental car with the same limits and deductibles. In some cases, rental agreements may require additional coverages that you don't have in your own auto insurance policy. In that case, you will need to buy additional auto insurance coverage from the rental company.
If you plan on renting a vehicle other than a car, you may be able to purchase inexpensive insurance from the rental company. If you're given the option of purchasing insurance, we strongly encourage you to do so. Those few extra dollars could save you a lot if you happen to damage their vehicle.
If you know you'll be renting a vehicle while you're traveling, it's wise to do a little research before you go. Thinking about auto insurance coverage before you go will give you more free time for actual sightseeing. No matter where you may be headed, or what type of vehicle you may be driving, be safe and have fun!
