What you need to know about renters coverage

If you're one of the 94.5 million people who rent, chances are you may have some questions about the ins and outs of renters insurance. And because insurance in any form can be complicated, we're here to clarify it for you.

Here are the top 3 things to know:
Your landlord's insurance won't cover you. While your landlord's policy will cover the building itself, it won't cover the contents of your home. So if a theft, fire, or other mishap occurs, you'd be responsible for replacing your stuff out of pocket.

How much could an incident cost? The majority of renters insurance claims (about 59 percent) center on theft. And with each theft claim generally costing about $4,500, skipping on renters insurance could be an expensive mistake.
Look for replacement cost coverage. While renters insurance will protect your stuff, not all policies are created equal. Some policies will only pay actual cash value, which takes depreciation into account. But renters coverage from Esurance* or one of our trusted partners will give you full replacement cost.
Coverage could cost less than a dollar a day. Contrary to popular belief, renters coverage is really affordable. Get your renters insurance quote now to see how reasonable it can be.
