required auto insurance coverages in kentucky
Residents of the Bluegrass State are required to carry the following minimum liability limits:
- $25,000 bodily injury liability coverage per person
- $50,000 bodily injury liability coverage per incident
- $10,000 property damage liability coverage per incident
Since Kentucky is a no-fault state, you're also required to purchase your policy with at least $10,000 in Personal injury protection (PIP). This pays for post-accident medical expenses (and more) for drivers on your policy and any passengers, regardless of who caused the accident.
You do have the right to decline no-fault coverage. If you decide to go this route, your insurer will submit a form on your behalf with the Kentucky Department of Insurance.
How no-fault coverage works
Your policy's PIP can help cover medical-related expenses (including lost wages) after an accident, regardless of fault.
Additionally, each driver on your policy has the right to accept or decline no-fault coverage, and you can choose the deductible you'd like to pay (between $0 and $1,000 per incident). The state-required minimum limit is $10,000, but you can add additional PIP to your policy if you prefer more coverage.
If you choose to have no-fault coverage on your policy, you're also choosing a limited right to sue the at-fault driver for medical expenses. You can still sue if medical expenses exceed $1,000, or if the accident resulted in death, permanent injury, or disfigurement.
If you and the other drivers on your policy decline PIP, you'll need to have Guest PIP for any passengers. Guest PIP comes with a $0 deductible.

uninsured drivers in kentucky
About 16 percent of Kentucky drivers were uninsured in 2012 according to the Insurance Research Council. That was higher than the national average of 12.6 percent.
Drivers convicted of driving uninsured face a fine of up to $1,000 and a possible 90 days in jail.
To protect yourself from uninsured drivers, consider adding uninsured motorist liability coverage to your policy.
