Dog-related incidents account for a large number of homeowners insurance claims every year. Learn more about how certain breeds — and pit bulls in particular — can impact buying a new home insurance policy.
pit bulls and home insurance: what you should know
We believe you when you say your 150-pound pit bull is the most slobbery, loving lap dog that's ever existed — but that doesn't mean you won't have trouble finding homeowners insurance coverage if you own this particular breed.
Since it's hard to get to know your pooch on an individual basis, insurers typically have to consider studies and statistics when determining what breeds present more (or less) of a financial risk.
And it's all for good reason: dog bites and other dog-related injuries resulted in about one-third of all homeowners insurance liability claim dollars paid out in 2014, amounting to more than $530 million. And of the 42 fatal dog attacks in 2014, pit bulls were involved in 64 percent of them.
That's why most insurers — Esurance included — won't be able to offer homeowners insurance if you have pit bulls in your household.
Other breeds that often appear on dog exclusion lists for homeowners insurance include:
- Staffordshire terriers
- German Shepherds
- Wolves and wolf hybrids
- A mix containing any of these breeds
However, some states — such as Michigan and Pennsylvania — have passed legislation that aims to prevent insurance companies from denying coverage to homeowners simply based on the breed of their dog alone.
These states say insurers need to look at dogs on an individual basis — that is, they should only deny coverage or raise premiums if your specific dog has a history of biting people or other violent behavior.
It's always a good idea to speak with a licensed agent about the breeds allowed under your specific homeowners policy. If you're an Esurance customer and have questions about your policy coverages, feel free to give us a ring at 1-800-ESURANCE (1-800-378-7262). We're here to help at these times.
