What is Esurance DriveSafe?
Esurance DriveSafe is a teen driving safety program that combines detailed driving reports and customizable cell phone restrictions so you can help your teen become a safe and responsible driver.
Use Esurance DriveSafe to:
- Receive customized alerts about your teen's driving behavior (like speeding, hard braking, and more)
- Limit specific types of cell phone use while their car is in motion (so your teen can access navigation, for example, but not Twitter)*
- Review a summary of your teen's progress and driving behavior in your personal Esurance DriveSafe account
*When the vehicle is in motion, teens with iPhones® will see a banner on their home screen, reminding them not to use their phone while driving. iPhones do not support restriction of phone functionality.
Why is Esurance offering this program?
Statistically, teens are at a higher risk of being involved in an accident than any other driver on the road. Distracted driving is a growing problem among teens and, at Esurance, we want to help parents address the issue the best way we know how — through innovative technology that's informative and easy to use.
Esurance DriveSafe does more than let you see how your teen is driving. It gives you tools to pinpoint where your teen struggles behind the wheel, so you can focus on specific behavior and help them become a safer driver.
How does it work?
When you enroll in Esurance DriveSafe, you'll receive a small telematics device you can easily install in the onboard diagnostics port (OBD-II) of the car your teen drives most (don't worry, we'll also send you step-by-step directions). Using Bluetooth technology, the telematics device and smartphone app work together to track your teen's driving habits and limit cell phone use when the car is in motion. Note: 911 is always accessible.
The device records and transmits data to your personalized (and private) account on esurancedrivesafe.com, so you can see how your teen is driving.
Does participating in the Esurance DriveSafe program affect my rates?
No. The information provided by Esurance DriveSafe is for your use only. Your rate will never go up or change based on info collected through the program.
What info does the device keep track of?
The device tracks the car's speed, acceleration, and any instances of hard braking, as well as mileage, location, and time of each trip. It can also alert you if the device is removed.
What else does Esurance use the driving information for?
The information provided by Esurance DriveSafe is for your benefit only. Any personalized data that's generated is hosted by a third party and will never be shared with Esurance.
The third-party host may use broad data for research purposes. For more information, please refer to the Terms & Conditions at esurancedrivesafe.com.
Will my privacy be maintained?
Yes, we'll protect your teen's driving data with the same rigor we apply to protecting all your info. Check out esurance.com/legal/privacy-and-security to learn more about our commitment to maintaining the privacy of your personal information.
Who's eligible for Esurance DriveSafe?
Esurance DriveSafe is available at no charge to all Esurance customers with teen drivers listed on their car insurance policies.*
*Available in all states where Esurance does business except MA and PA.
Will the device work with my teen's vehicle?
The device is compatible with most cars that are a model year 1996 or newer. It is not compatible with hybrid or electric vehicles.
Note: if you think the device interferes with your teen's ability to safely operate the vehicle, remove it immediately and give us a call at 1-800-ESURANCE (1-800-378-7262).
Will the app work on my teen's smartphone?
Esurance DriveSafe works with the following devices:
- iPhone iOS 6 or higher
- Android™ OS 2.3 or higher
When the vehicle is in motion, teens with iPhones will see a banner on their home screen, reminding them not to use their phone while driving. iPhones do not support restriction of phone functionality.
Teens with cell phones on other operating systems will see a block screen and functionality will be disabled until the car stops.
How does my teen download the app?
The first time you log into your Esurance DriveSafe site, you'll be asked to provide some basic information about your teen, including their phone number. Shortly after you enter their phone number, your teen will receive a text message with a link directing them to download the app.
If, for some reason, your teen doesn't receive the link or needs to reinstall the app at any time, they can simply visit their phone's app store and search for Esurance DriveSafe. You can also refer to your instruction manual for more information.
How do I stop participating in Esurance DriveSafe?
You can opt out of the program anytime by calling us at 1-800-ESURANCE (1-800-378-7262). If you opt out of the program, we'll send you a prepaid mailing label so you can conveniently return the device.
If you don't return the device after opting out or canceling your policy, you will be charged a fee.
What if my teen removes the device from the car?
If the Esurance DriveSafe device is removed, you'll receive an alert.
Will it drain my teen's smartphone battery?
While extended use of any application can drain your mobile device's battery, Esurance DriveSafe uses Bluetooth technology, which consumes less energy than similar GPS-based systems.
What about emergency calls?
Esurance DriveSafe always allows for emergency calls to 911. Within your settings, you can also define a list of phone numbers your teen can call at any time.
Can my teen use their hands-free device?
Yes. Esurance DriveSafe allows for other Bluetooth pairings — like hands-free devices, address book sharing, and data streaming. In fact, you can even customize your settings so that the phone can only be used in hands-free mode.
Does Esurance DriveSafe restrict cell phone use when the car is not moving?
No. Esurance DriveSafe determines when the car is in motion and applies blocking technology based on that movement.* This means your teen will be able to use their phone normally whenever the vehicle is in a safe, nonmoving state, even if the engine is running.
*When the vehicle is in motion, teens with iPhones will see a banner on their home screen, reminding them not to use their phone while driving. iPhones do not support restriction of phone functionality.
Can I remove the device for routine vehicle maintenance services or repairs?
Sure thing. Some vehicle services or repairs will require removal of the device. Just be sure to reinstall the device after the services are completed.
