    Carbon offsets are in style
Carbon offsets make a carbon neutral lifestyle a more realistic
goal. Reduce what you can, and offset what you can't. Easy to buy
and sell, carbon offsets help protect the environment. They are affordable, attainable, and have no direct impact on our daily
    routines.

Mainstream advertising is rapidly catching on to the idea that
environmentally responsible companies are more appealing to
consumers. Recently, airlines, auto makers, and passenger train
companies have featured various carbon offsetting promotions.
So what is a carbon offset?
A carbon offset is essentially a promise to counterbalance carbon emissions, or carbon footprints.
Your carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) you produce on a daily basis. The offsets
target carbon because CO2 is "the most important global warming gas emitted by human activity,"
according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Offsets can be purchased through trustworthy providers, such as Carbonfund.org and
NativeEnergy.com. These organizations and others work with individuals and companies like
Esurance to offset emissions. There are typically three ways your carbon offsets are implemented.
    You can choose to:
    • Fund reforestation projects
    • Subsidize renewable energy
    • Reduce current energy use
Reforestation projects include the planting of new trees and even forests that will absorb a portion
of our excess CO2 emissions. Renewable energy offsets are used to make alternative energy forms,
like wind and solar power, more affordable. Reducing current energy use involves the funding of
energy-reducing projects as well as purchasing carbon credits on the Chicago Climate Exchange. Carbon credits can then be "retired," limiting the amount of emissions that can enter the atmosphere.
    Offset what you can't reduce
Before you can consider yourself carbon neutral,
measure your daily impact using Esurance's
Carbon Footprint Calculator. It takes roughly 3 minutes
to complete, and you'll get a detailed analysis of your
Earth Conservation Plan score. Your score takes
into account your actual carbon output (in tons) as well
as your lifestyle, habits, and well-meaning intentions.
You can pledge to reduce your score, and periodically
check in to track your improvement.
    Global emissions
As Americans, we have our work cut out for ourselves. According to a 2004 study commissioned by the United Nations, the U.S. leads the world in carbon emissions
by an alarming margin, accounting for 22.2% of total
    global emissions.
      Reduce your carbon footprint
    • Carpool once a week
    • Don't leave your engine idling
    • Fill your garden with native trees
      and plants
    • Make sure the dishwasher's full   before running it
    Trivia alert...

    The Vatican is the only
    carbon neutral state in
    the world.

Get Rid of Clutter the Green Way!
Eliminating clutter is a great way to feel better about yourself and your home environment. But, while we may reduce our stress by cleaning out our homes, we add more stress to the environment by dumping all of our junk at the local landfill.
To be mindful of the environment and gain peace of mind, Esurance shares some tips on how to reduce clutter while developing eco-conscious habits at the same time.
Freecycle. Give your unwanted stuff to someone who can put it to good use. You can list your unwanted items on sites like Craigslist and Freecycle.
Recycle. Drop off items like clothes and books at donation centers, such as Goodwill and the Salvation Army. Paper, plastic and glass may be accepted at your local recycling center.
E-cycle. To dispose of hazardous waste like old VCR players, cell phones, and batteries in an
eco-conscious manner, contact your local authority or visit sites like Earth 911, Call2Recycle and Plug-In To eCycling to find a drop-off location.
Decrease consumption. When you want to buy something, be honest with yourself about whether you really need the item.
Stop junk mail. To regain control over the volume of incoming mail, contact the company's customer service department and ask them to remove your name from their mailing list. For more tips on reducing your junk mail, visit Privacy Rights Clearinghouse. To have someone else do it for you, visit GreenDimes to sign up.
