How did you first get into mountain bike racing?
Living in Colorado my whole life, I've ridden mountain bikes as long as I can
remember. About 6 years ago, I decided that it was time to test my skills and see
what I could do in a race. I entered a local race, won the race, and have been
hooked ever since. Over the years, I've moved up in class and now compete as a
CAT 1, which is one step below Professional.
What do you like most about it?
Every course/race is different. Some require technical bike-handling skills, others
require massive amounts of endurance, and some require both. The race series
are spread throughout the Rocky Mountain region, and traveling to places like
Snowmass, Crested Butte, Telluride, Breckenridge, and Winter Park is also very
enjoyable.
Do you have a favorite course?
My favorite course is the cross-country course in Telluride. For me, it has the
perfect mix of ups and downs. Also, the course is at a very high altitude (over
10,000 feet at the top), so the views are spectacular.
What's your most memorable racing moment?
In 2006, at the Snowmass National, I was top 3 about halfway up the first climb and
my drive train exploded, resulting in a DNF (Did Not Finish). Upon returning home,
I circled the 2007 race on my calendar. For the following year, I focused on that
race for a peak performance. I went back with very high expectations for myself
and came away with a win! Standing on the top step of the podium made all the
hard work and time I had spent the previous year very worthwhile.
Do you have a least memorable racing moment?
I've had my share of bad races, but even when I'm not up front, I still enjoy
competing, even if it is at the back of the pack!
How do you train for the race season?
My training begins in late November. A typical week for me includes 5-6 days on
the bike for a total of 10-15 hours of training per week. The majority of my training
is done on a road bike, and when it's snowing or really cold, I'm indoors on a
trainer.
What kind of bike do you race on?
A Specialized S-Works Epic with a SRAM drive train and Maxxis tires. The frame is made
completely from carbon fiber, making the bike extremely light and stiff, or, on a
race course very fast.
How long have you worked for Esurance?
One year.
What do you like most about working for Esurance?
That we are never satisfied and continue to push the organization to be even
better. Esurance also values its employees, and encourages a healthy life-work
balance.
