Love Me, Love My Dog (or Cat): Traveling with Your Pet
In many homes, pets become like family members, playing an important role in peoples lives. (If you dont believe the impact pets have on their owners, read more about Jackpot, an Esurance policyholders cat in our Customer Comments section. According to his owner, Deborah, buying auto insurance from us is easy enough for even him to do!)
Just as youd want to keep your family members safe when you drive, you should also consider your pets safety and its needs.
Preparing for the Trip
If youre going on a long road trip and bringing your pet along, make sure you get your pet gradually accustomed to traveling in the car. Start with a few trips around the block and keep increasing the distance over time.
Before leaving on your trip, you may want to alter your pets mealtime schedule. It would be horrible for everyone if your pet had an accident in the car. If youre planning to stay in a hotel with your pet, make sure to call in advance to find out if the hotel is pet-friendly. Talk to your pet expert. Your veterinarian should be able to recommend ways to make your pet more comfortable in the car.
During the Trip
Be aware of your pets needs (and yours, too) by making frequent stops during your long trip. Rest stops provide a break for everyone and help keep fatigue and restlessness at bay. Taking breaks can also increase your alertness and minimize your chances of falling asleep at the wheel. Apart from being potentially life threatening to you and your passengers furry or otherwise, losing control of your car could result in costly auto insurance claims.
Pet Carriers & Seat Belts
Keeping your pet restrained with the proper pet car seat or carrier could save its life in an accident. In addition, having your pet in one place can minimize distractions for the driver. Distractions on the road can lead to accidents and auto insurance premium increases.
Never Leave Your Pet Unattended
Never leave your pet unattended in your parked car. According to the Humane Society, your car can heat up to 120 degrees in minutes on warm days-- even with the windows cracked. You dont want your furry friend to suffer from brain damage or die from heatstroke or suffocation because of your carelessness!
Preparing in advance for your trip with your pet and keeping its best interests in mind on the road will help make it an enjoyable trip for everyone. Read our other Esurance articles for more information on driving safety and other auto insurance-related topics.
