Mandatory Utah liability coverages
Bodily injury
If the policyholder or another driver covered by the Utah policy is found to be at fault in an accident resulting in injuries or fatalities, the following is typically covered under bodily injury liability coverage:
- Medical expenses
- Lost wages
- Pain and suffering
- Legal defense if the drivers listed on the policy are involved in a lawsuit resulting from a car accident
Bodily injury coverage helps pay for damages caused to a third party.

______
Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
PIP is mandatory in Utah, and helps cover all necessary medical costs if a covered person is hurt in an auto accident.
What's covered?
- Medical expenses – These may include medical and surgical treatment; dental and optometric treatment; ambulance and nursing services; necessary medications, medical supplies, and prosthetic devices.
- Loss of income – If you or your passengers are unable to work due to accident-related injuries, PIP helps you or the passenger recover the lost income. This benefit may be waived for a reduction in premium.
- Loss of essential services – Should you or your regular passengers need help performing household or other tasks due to accident-related injuries, PIP also helps pay for such essential services.
- Funeral expenses – If a covered individual dies from accident-related injuries, PIP helps pay for related funeral expenses.
- Survivors' loss – If a covered individual dies from accident-related injuries, PIP compensates the covered individual's heir(s) for the death.
How much protection does this coverage provide?
Total payments covered by PIP are limited to $3,000, $5,000, or $10,000 per person, per incident, depending on the coverage limit selected. Selected limits apply to all vehicles on the policy.
Who's covered?
PIP covers the policyholder, family members who live in the same household, passengers, and any pedestrian who sustains bodily injury due to an accident involving the covered auto.
______
Uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury
Uninsured/underinsured motorist compensates you for bodily injury, sickness, disease, or death. These coverages apply if an uninsured motorist or underinsured motorist strikes you. Uninsured motorist (UM) and underinsured motorist (UIM) provide coverage for covered persons who are legally entitled to recover damages from the owner/operator of an uninsured motor vehicle because of bodily injury, sickness, disease, or death.
UM coverage and UIM coverage are separate coverages. You may elect UM coverage and UIM coverage with limits equal to the lesser of the limits of your bodily injury liability coverage or the maximum limits made available by us. You may also reject UM coverage and UIM coverage in their entirety.
Uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage will have the same limits for all vehicles on the policy. Additionally, the limits you choose must be less than, or equal to, your selected bodily injury limits.
If the covered individuals are injured in an accident caused by a driver who has no auto insurance or insufficient coverage, entitled compensatory damages will be covered.
Who's covered?
Uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage protects the named insured, family members of the named insured who reside in the same household, passengers, and any person occupying a covered auto with the permission of its owner, the policyholder, or authorized policy members.
How much protection does this coverage provide?
The coverage limits you select in your Utah auto insurance quote are the maximum amounts that will be paid per person, per incident, respectively.
If the other driver is uninsured, this coverage can generally pay up to the limit you purchase. If the driver is underinsured, this coverage typically pays the difference between what's covered by the other driver's liability insurance and the accident's costs, up to the limits of your underinsured motorist coverage.
If the limits you purchase are lower than an accident's costs, you'll be responsible for paying the amount over your limits, unless you're covered by health insurance. Selected limits apply to all vehicles on the policy.
