indiana car insurance

Hello there, Indiana driver, and welcome to our guide to Indiana car insurance. You'll find info on legal requirements, optional coverages, Esurance discounts, perks like RepairView®, and more.

Indiana's mandatory car insurance requirements

Indiana drivers are legally required to carry the following coverages:

  • $25,000 in bodily injury liability coverage per person
  • $50,000 in bodily injury liability coverage per incident
  • $10,000 in property damage liability coverage per incident

You'll often see these minimum limits expressed as 25/50/10, and you can choose higher limits when you customize and buy your policy.

All Indiana policies also include uninsured motorist liability coverage, with the same limits as your liability coverage, and underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage with a minimum limit of $50,000 per incident. These coverages can help you avoid heavy bills if you're hit by a driver whose liability coverage is insufficient.

When you buy your policy, you can reject uninsured/underinsured coverage in writing.

Uninsured drivers in Indiana

A recent report from the Insurance Research Council estimated that 16 percent of Indiana drivers were uninsured as of 2009, which was above the national average of 13.8 percent.

Uninsured and underinsured liability coverages offer financial protection against the uninsured.

Driving without liability insurance

If you're caught driving without insurance in Indiana, your license will be suspended for at least 90 days. Two or more of these license suspensions within a 3-year period will mean an additional one-year suspension.

Uninsured motorist database

If you're convicted of driving without insurance, your name will be in the Previously Uninsured Motorist Registry (PUMR) for 5 years. Once you're in the PUMR, the state of Indiana may request that you provide proof of financial responsibility at any time through random questionnaires.

Factors that can impact your Indiana car insurance premium:

  • Driving record
  • Age, gender, and marital status
  • Make and model of your car
  • How frequently you drive
  • ZIP Code
  • Claims history
  • Credit-based insurance score
  • Coverages, deductibles, and limits you select
