connecticut car insurance
Welcome, Connecticut drivers. Whether you're new to the Nutmeg State or just tracking something down, you're in the right place for state-specific car insurance info. We'll explain everything from required coverages and optional add-ons to the money-saving discounts available through Esurance.
Car insurance in Connecticut
All registered vehicles in Connecticut must be insured, and drivers are required to carry at least the following liability coverages and limits:
- $20,000/$40,000 bodily injury liability coverage (per person, per accident)
- $10,000 property damage liability coverage per accident
- $20,000/$40,000 uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury liability coverage
These are the legal minimums — you'll be able to select higher coverage limits (and additional coverages) when you buy your policy.
Uninsured drivers in Connecticut
A recent report from the Insurance Research Council estimated that 10 percent of Connecticut drivers were uninsured. The national average was 13.8 percent.
Alternative car insurance options
If you're considered a high-risk driver and you're struggling to find an insurance policy, visit the state's official page for non-standard car insurance coverage.
No proof of insurance
Car insurance is mandatory for Connecticut drivers, and you must keep your proof of insurance in your car at all times. This can be your policy's declarations page or your permanent ID card.
A lapse of coverage will be reported by your former insurer to the state, which may then result in a suspended drivers license. Reinstating it will require proof of coverage and a $200 fine.
How your insurance rate is determined
The following factors can affect your car insurance premium in Connecticut:
- Driving record
- Vehicle type and usage
- ZIP Code (where you park the vehicle)
- Credit history
- Claims history
- Deductibles and limits on your policy
- Previous insurance history

A car insurer's view on state driving trends
Ability to drive safely
First, the bad news from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration: In 2010, 319 people lost their lives due to car accidents in Connecticut. This was an increase from the 224 deaths in 2009. Now, the good news: Connecticut's overall traffic fatality rate (per 100,000 motorists) was 8.92, below the national average of 10.63.
Protecting teen drivers
Connecticut enacted strict driving laws for teenagers in 2008, including curfew restrictions for teenage drivers. And they seem to be working. From 2007-2009, there was a 34 percent drop in Connecticut teen crashes (compared to a 26 percent drop nationwide).
Connecticut's DUI stats
Forty-four percent of Connecticut traffic fatalities in 2009 involved a driver with an over-the-limit blood alcohol concentration, which was the second-highest percentage in the nation.
