3 pre-holiday gifts for your car

Whether you're headed over the river or through the woods, if you're like 42.2 million other Americans, chances are you'll be traveling during the holidays. And with airplane tickets averaging $302 this year, AAA expects a record 90 percent of holiday travelers (40 million) to drive.

That's a lot of cars on the road. And with so much going on between November and December, it can be easy to let basic vehicle maintenance slip. To help you avoid potential malfunctions and breakdowns (and in the spirit of holiday gift giving), here's a short (and affordable) list of things that you might want to put on your vehicle's wish list this year.

Windshield wiper blades. Although replacement blades generally cost less than $10, they're also one of the most neglected components on our cars. Nonetheless, wiper blades should be replaced at least once a year, and the beginning of winter is the perfect time to do so.

Tire rotation. Like replacing windshield wiper blades, rotating your tires is probably not all that high on your list of things to do. But because tires wear differently, it's recommended that you rotate them every 5–10,000 miles. This can help extend the life of your tires and it costs as little as $2.50 per wheel.

An oil change. The importance of changing your oil regularly can't be overstated, but neither can the ease with which this small task can be forgotten. The average oil change costs between $25 and $35 and can save you miles and miles of hassle and stress.

Top 3 tips for avoiding colds and flus

Of course, with the holiday season comes flu season. With that in mind, our health insurance partner eHealthInsurance provided the following 3 tips for avoiding the flu.

Wash your hands. One of the easiest ways to catch a cold or flu is by touching your eyes, nose or mouth after coming into contact with germs. Wash your hands regularly and use anti-bacterial hand sanitizers that contain at least 60 percent alcohol, the minimum needed to kill germs on contact.
Cover your mouth. There are millions of germs in a sneeze or cough (and they can travel as far as 3 feet), so cover your mouth to prevent their spread.
Rest up. Stress weakens the immune system, making it harder for your body to fight off sickness. And since lack of sleep only ups your stress levels, make sure to catch all the Zs
you need. Your body will thank you for it.

And of course, regular checkups with your doctor are always a good idea. If you need quality
health insurance, we can help. We've partnered with eHealthInsurance, a licensed health insurance agency, to help you compare more than 180 top companies — without any fees.
