Compare Auto Theft Rates Across the U.S.

Where you live impacts how much you pay for auto insurance. Your vehicle's garaging location—along with other factors like your driving record, auto insurance discounts, and credit score, help determine your auto insurance premium. One factor that significantly impacts your auto insurance rate is the amount of auto theft that occurs in your area. Let's compare geographic regions so you can determine the auto-theft rate in your region:

Northeast
According to the FBI's 2006 Crime Index, 10.2% of U.S. auto thefts occur in the Northeast. The FBI estimates about 222 auto thefts occur per 100,000 people in the Northeast.

The Midwest
The Midwest accounts for about 18.5% of U.S. auto thefts, says the FBI's 2006 Crime Index Report. In this part of the country, the FBI estimates about 332 auto thefts occur per 100,000 people.

The South
The FBI's 2006 Crime Index estimates thefts in the South account for 34.5% of all auto thefts in the U.S. According to their estimates, roughly 378 auto thefts occur per 100,000 people in the South.

The West
According to the FBI's 2006 Crime Index, 36.8% of U.S. auto thefts occur in the West. This part of the country has the highest rate of theft. For every 100,000 people, 632 autos are stolen.

Comparing Auto-Theft Rates
Generally, largely populated areas experience more auto theft (which in turn results in more auto insurance claims being filed) than rural or suburban areas. However, auto theft can occur no matter where you live. The FBI estimates 448 autos are stolen per 100,000 people in cities, 187 autos per 100,000 people in suburban communities, and 133 autos per 100,000 people in rural areas.
