Location, location, location: this isn't only important in real estate. Where you live also impacts how much you pay for car insurance. Though a number of other factors affect your rate, your vehicle's garaging location and the amount of auto theft that occurs in your area can significantly lower or increase your monthly premium.
The good news? While auto-theft rates vary by region, according to the FBI, auto thefts decreased by 17.2 percent in 2009. And they've been declining steadily for the last 20 years!
To get a better sense of where your region ranks according to the FBI's 2008 crime statistics, read on.
The Northeast
The Northeast has the lowest percentage of auto thefts. Only 10 percent, or about 174 auto thefts per 100,000 people, occur in this region — and that's a 10.9 percent decrease from 2007.
The Midwest
The Midwest accounts for about 18.3 percent of U.S. auto thefts. About 262 per 100,000 people in 2008, down from 300 per 100,000 people the year before.
The South
The South has the highest percentage (37.8 percent) of auto thefts in the U.S. Roughly 323 occur per 100,000 people. The number may seem high in comparison to other regions, but this is still a 10.3 percent decrease from 2007.
The West
The West follows the South in highest rate of auto thefts: 33.9 percent occur on this side of the country. For every 100,000 people, 458 autos are stolen. If you live in Nevada, be aware that your state leads the region with 611 autos stolen per 100,000 people.
