What We Do
Esurance Auto Insurance Is Instant (and Ecofriendly!) Because It's Electronic.
Most insurance companies print, mail, and store thousands of pages of insurance documents, all of which adds up to a lot of paper. As we all know, paper is made from trees or recycled fibers. Though recycled fiber use is more environmentally friendly than paper made from trees, producing recycled paper also has environmental costs associated with itin terms of the energy, water, and chemicals used with production.
Unlike a lot of other auto insurance companies, Esurance doesn't have to use all that paper. That's because we make our policy documents available to our policyholders online, store documents electronically with state-of-the-art document imaging, and communicate with our policyholders via email. We estimate that Esurance's paperless customer experience and electronic document storage saved approximately 2,748 trees since 2000.* That's in addition to the 27,243 trees we’ve planted to date!
Drivers are catching on to our paperless practices. In fact, Mark of Decatur, Illinois, wrote:

I am an insurance agent for a major captive property and casualty insurer. Why did I leave and insure with Esurance? I believe in and support your eco-friendly way of doing business. The amount of paper and waste generated by most insurance companies is beyond comprehension.
Furthermore, my total online experience (quoting and purchasing) was easy, logical and hassle-free. Your Web site is a bright example of doing it right. Thank you for caring about Earth!

Breathe Easy, Esurance Does Its Part to Keep Our Air Clean.
Conserving trees isn't the only important thing a company like Esurance can do for the environment. Esurance also supports efforts to improve air quality, so that we can all breathe a little easier.

Notably, Esurance has purchased hybrid vehicles for its claims fleet where they're available. Hybrid vehicles can reduce the emission of smog-forming pollutants by up to 90% and cut carbon dioxide emissions in half.
Esurance also educates the public about topics like reducing gas consumption, and is currently exploring other ways to encourage drivers to do what they can to improve air quality.

We're Certainly Not Neutral About Protecting the Environment.
We're always working to make our operations environmentally friendly, particularly by reducing our carbon footprint when we can, and offsetting it when we can't. Carbon offsetting is the act of counterbalancing your carbon emissions by reducing an equal amount of carbon somewhere else. We're proud to work with Carbonfund.org to offset 100% of our electricity use in each of our offices nationwide through reforestation projects.
We're Always Working to Do Even More
Even a green company like Esurance, still uses some natural resources. Though nearly paperless, we still have to use some paper. As employees, we decrease air quality when we have to drive to work. Our offices also generate trash that takes up precious space in landfills. But being aware of all that and doing what we can to offset any impact is an extremely important part of Esurance's environmental commitment.
As a testament to our commitment, Esurance received the Spirit & Awareness Award from EarthCorps in Seattle due to the company’s support of the nonprofit as well as our environmentally sustainable business practices.
As Esurance grows, we plan to do even more to make our business sustainable. We love to hear from you, so please send us any suggestions you have to help us in these efforts. To see what other Esurance policyholders are doing for the environment, take a look at our Policyholder Corner page. And, if you're not an Esurance policyholder already, remember that you're not just a "consumer," but someone with the power to choose. Consider buying your auto insurance from a company like Esurance that truly "saves some green."
*This number is based on number of policyholders; average number of communications required for our average policyholder; and external estimates on paper production, which state that it takes 1 tree to produce 80,500 sheets of paper. If you're trying to do the math, yes, we would have to send 20,000,000 pieces of paper each year if we didn't offer electronic documents and communicate electronically! And that doesn't even include envelopes!!
