About RV insurance
Is RV insurance necessary?
While you can partially cover your RV with an existing auto policy, we don't recommend it. RV insurance policies are specially tailored to meet a RV user's unique needs, covering many possibilities auto policies can't. Those who live in their RV will find full-timer's insurance policies especially useful. Get an RV insurance quote through Esurance to find a policy that meets your needs.
What are the benefits of RV insurance?
Your RV offers much more than a standard car and therefore deserves specialized coverage. It's a home away from home, packed with amenities and valuable possessions.
Just think of all the situations you might encounter in your RV — situations generally not covered under a car insurance policy:
- Clothes, camping equipment, and personal valuables are lost or stolen from your RV
- Someone is hurt in or near your RV
- Your RV is damaged on the road, and you need a place to stay and a way to get there
When you insure your RV with its own unique policy, you can select a wide range of coverages designed to address these situations and more.
An RV covered under your auto policy will have only basic liability coverage, which leaves you financially vulnerable. Plus, you won't have any of the following coverages:
- Total loss recovery/agreed value
- Emergency expense
- Vacation liability
- Personal effect replacement
- Full-timers package
- Roadside assistance

- Motor homes, including classes A, B, and C

How is an RV different from a travel trailer?
RVs, or motor homes, are recreational vehicles that provide a comfortable living space suitable for long- or short-term residence.
Travel trailers, on the other hand, are portable, non-motorized units ideal for recreational and camping use. You don't need a special permit to tow a travel trailer.
What features must a vehicle have to qualify for RV insurance?
To qualify for RV insurance provided through Esurance, a vehicle must have all of the following permanently installed:
- Cooking appliances
- Refrigeration
- Bathroom facilities
- Self-contained heating and/or air-conditioning
- A drinkable water supply
- A 110–125 volt electrical power system
I have an RV converted from a bus. Can I get an RV insurance policy through Esurance?
If your converted bus meets the requirements listed above, then, yes, you'll have access to all the coverage options available for standard RVs.
Note, however, you cannot obtain RV insurance from Esurance's partner for an RV converted from a school bus.

What info should I have handy when getting an RV insurance quote?
To get the most accurate quote possible, have the following info with you when you call or go online:
- Details on the RV itself:
- Year of manufacture
- Make
- Model
- Mileage
- Condition
- The names of people you want insured on your policy
- Your current or most recent insurer's information
- Details on the RV's safety devices (if any)
- Info on the personal items you plan to store in your RV or bring with you on the road, which will help you customize your personal effects replacement coverage limits
I plan to use my RV for commercial purposes. Can you provide me with appropriate insurance?
You can purchase commercial RV insurance through Esurance. You can
get your quote online or call 1-888-806-9598. A commercial lines specialist will be
happy to help you select the limits, deductibles, and coverage options that best fit
your needs.
I haven't bought my RV yet. Can I still get a free RV insurance quote?
You can. Just keep in mind that your rates will depend on the year, make, and model of the RV you want to buy, so be sure to have that information handy when getting your quote online or over the phone. A licensed agent will be happy to help you select the coverages, deductibles, and limits that best fit your situation.
What should I keep in mind as I compare RV insurance quotes?
First, consider how you want to use your RV. If you only rev up the RV for periodic vacations, consider a policy that covers the full range of vehicular possibilities — such as collisions — and add specific coverages tailored to vacation use, such as vacation liability, personal effects replacement, and more.
If your RV will be your primary residence, you'll need a full-timer's package, which offers coverages similar to those bundled in a homeowners policy, including personal liability, medical payments to others, loss assessment, and storage shed contents coverage.
If you plan to compare multiple policy options, make sure the deductibles, limits, and optional coverages you select remain comparable. That way you'll get a better idea of how your options stack up against each other.
And when you're comparing rates, check on the insurance provider's financial strength on sites like A.M. Best to make sure you get a reliable policy.
Where, when, and how many
Can I get RV insurance through Esurance in any state?
You can purchase RV insurance through Esurance if you garage your RV in any state but Hawaii. In addition, RV insurance through Esurance cannot be obtained in Washington, D.C., or Canada.
How many vehicles and drivers can I cover under my RV insurance policy?
You can insure as many as 5 drivers and 4 vehicles under a single RV insurance policy.
If I buy an RV insurance policy today, how soon can I start to drive legally?
Assuming you've already covered licensing and registration, you can start driving on the policy's effective date (also known as start date). You can determine your policy's start date when you customize your quote.
If you're switching insurers, make sure that your new policy's start date takes effect before your current policy ends, or on the same day. Lapses in coverage can lead to higher rates down the road.
