managing your personal watercraft insurance coverages
Personal watercrafts are unique, exciting vehicles that warrant their own specialized coverages. Here's your guide to the coverage options offered by your PWC insurance.
What are my PWC coverage options?
Esurance's partner provides a specialized PWC insurance package to meet the needs of each PWC owner. Unique features of this coverage include:
- Water ski coverage
- High limits
- Low deductibles
- Replacement cost of personal effects
- Actual cash value (ACV) coverage
- Unlimited use
Plus, you'll be able to select the following optional but valuable protections:
- Roadside assistance
- Fuel spill protection
- Wreckage removal
What are the advantages of having high limits and low deductibles?
Limits and deductibles essentially define the maximum amounts your insurer will pay and the amount you'll pay out of pocket if a claim occurs.
High limits mean that you're better protected against mishaps. The higher your limits, the less you pay out of pocket to cover property damage or medical expenses. If the total cost of repairs or medical treatments exceeds your limits, then you're liable for the remaining expenses.
Lower deductibles also save out-of-pocket expenses, since deductibles define the amount you have to pay in the event of a claim. For example, if your PWC was damaged, and your deductible is $500, you'll have to pay that amount before your insurance kicks in to cover the rest.
If you're looking for cheaper PWC insurance, consider raising your deductible and lowering your limits. Just know that if you do so, it will lead to greater liability and more out-of-pocket expenses if there's an incident.
I see that unlimited use coverage is available, but I've heard that there are often restrictions on personal watercraft usage. Can you explain?
Your PWC insurance through Esurance doesn't limit where or when you use your Jet Ski, SEA-DOO, or WaveRunner. That means you can hit the rivers, lakes, and ocean waves anywhere within the United States and as far as 50 miles from American shores.
That said, local and state ordinances may restrict when and where you can ride. Many states have "dawn to dusk" usage limitations and restrict PWC use near shores and docks. The county where you plan to ride your watercraft may also have its own unique restrictions, so it's worth researching local codes before hitting the waters.
For info on your state's laws and regulations, check out the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators' boating law administrator directory and the Personal Watercraft Industry Association.
I often go water-skiing, using my Jet Ski to haul skiers. Are my water skis covered by my PWC insurance? What about the skiers?
This partially depends on the options you select. When you buy PWC insurance through Esurance, you'll receive water ski and water sports coverage when you buy bodily injury and property damage liability coverages.
Water sports coverage will pay to repair damaged PWCs and treat bodily injuries caused by someone towed by your PWC. To protect your skiers, add medical payments coverage.
What exactly does personal effects replacement cost coverage provide?
Chances are you've purchased some unique accessories to use with your WaveRunner or SEA-DOO, including personal floatation gear, high-end sunglasses, and a digital SLR to help you catch that perfect sunset. Personal effects coverage provides up to $5,000 to help you replace all these items and more if they're lost or damaged and starts at just over a dollar a month.
What is actual cash value coverage?
Actual cash value coverage is the amount you'll receive if your personal watercraft is deemed a total loss. The actual cash value of your PWC is determined by the market value, age, and condition of your watercraft at the time it's wrecked. This total loss coverage, the only one available to PWC users, offers PWC riders an economical way to protect themselves against a total loss.
Can I get roadside assistance for my PWC?
Yes. Since most PWC owners don't have a lake in their backyard, PWC insurance through Esurance does cover transport of your PWC to and from home. This coverage is automatically added to any PWC policy that includes comprehensive protection and covers the trailer you use to haul your PWC.
With roadside assistance, help is just a phone call away anywhere in the United States or Canada. This coverage provides towing to the nearest qualified repair facility and covers on-site labor costs for any of the following:
- Mechanical or electrical breakdown
- Battery failure
- Insufficient fuel, oil, water, or other fluid supply
- Flat tire
- Entrapment in snow, mud, water, or sand within 100 feet of the roadway
Roadside assistance is available 24/7. It also covers the vehicle towing your PWC, even if it's insured with another provider.
Why would I need fuel spill protection?
While it's best to refuel your PWC onshore, there's always the chance that your fuel tank will spring a leak on the water. If that happens, you could be liable for the cost to clean up this harmful contaminant. If you have PWC liability coverage, fuel spill protection comes standard.
What does wreckage removal coverage include?
Wreckage removal coverage will help cover the cost of raising, removing, and/or destroying the wreckage of a sunken PWC. This coverage is automatically included in your comprehensive and collision protection.
I ride my PWC in the waters of Canada and Mexico — will my insurance policy protect me there?
Your basic policy already covers you throughout the United States and Canada. And if your PWC insurance policy has trailer coverage and comprehensive and collision coverage, you'll get roadside assistance and Mexico physical damage coverage too.
Roadside assistance provides coverage for towing and some on-site work in the U.S. and Canada.
Mexico physical damage coverage covers physical damage to your PWC in Mexico and within 50 miles of its extensive coasts. If your PWC requires repair in Mexico, this coverage will pay an amount comparable to what a U.S. marine shop would charge for repairs.
