What is First Party Benefits coverage?

If first party benefits, or FPB, doesn't sound familiar to you, don't be alarmed. FPB is not a common form of coverage. In fact, only Pennsylvania requires you to buy FPB when you purchase your auto insurance policy.

First party benefits cover several areas of insurance coverage. However, only FPB-Medical is mandatory. FPB-Medical provides coverage to the policyholder, drivers listed on the policy and relatives living in the same household as the policyholder.

The lowest limit option available is $5,000. Depending on the comprehensiveness of your current medical insurance coverage, you may want to consider increasing this amount.

Similar to medical payments coverage and Personal Injury Protection, FPB helps pay for your medical expenses if you or relatives living in your household are injured in an accident. These services include:

  • Related medical and surgical treatment
  • Essential rehabilitative services (physical therapy, speech pathology, etc.)
  • Necessary dental, psychiatric, psychological, and optometric treatment
  • Ambulance and nursing service
  • Required medications, medical supplies, and prosthetic devices

Covered costs are subject to the coverages and limits you choose when you buy your auto insurance policy. On a Pennsylvania auto insurance policy insuring more than one car, all vehicles must carry the same limits on FPB medical coverage.

When you buy your auto insurance policy, you can also choose optional FPB coverages to help pay for lost income, accidental death, and/or funeral costs. See our index page on auto insurance tips for your state for further details.
