What kinds of boats cannot be insured through Esurance?

Boats that are over 50 feet long, valued at $350,000 or more, exceed 75 mph, and have more than 500 horsepower (single engine) or 1,000 horsepower (twin engines) must be incredible, but our partners don't offer insurance on them. Note that bass boats capable of speeds over 75 mph are acceptable. Limits may vary by state.

Our partners also don't offer boat insurance policies on houseboats, live-aboards (boats used as primary residence), amphibious land boats, hovercrafts, airboats, homemade boats with no serial numbers, boats without a motor, boats that fail to meet
U.S. Coast Guard regulations, boats with wooden hulls, and boats owned by more
than 2 people.

Can I get an insurance policy on a boat used primarily in the ocean?

Yes, but there is a 75-mile limit. That means if your boat is 76 miles off the coast and something happens, your claim may be denied by your insurance provider. When you get your quote, you can add additional coverage to extend this limit to 125 miles off the coast.

How many boats and boaters can I insure on one policy?

Our partners allow you to insure up to 5 boaters and 4 boats on a single boat insurance policy. Anyone riding in your boat is also covered through the policy's bodily injury/property damage coverage.

As a bonus, insuring more than one boat on your policy will qualify you for the
Multi-Boat discount.

______

Why you need boat insurance

Is boat insurance required by law?

Not in most states. We recommend checking with your state's Department of Motor Vehicles to find out if it's required.

Apart from your state, other interested parties may require you to have boat insurance. If you take out a loan to buy a boat, for example, your lender may require you to insure it to protect itself from the risk of loss or damage. And many marinas require proof of boat insurance before allowing you to dock.

If I have home owners insurance, do I still need boat insurance?

While your home owners policy may include some kind of coverage for your boat, additional coverage might be advisable. A typical home owners policy may provide basic liability coverage for boat-related incidents, but the following boat insurance coverages are not included:

  • Agreed value/total loss replacement
  • Emergency labor and towing
  • Fuel-spill liability
  • Wreckage removal
  • Uninsured/underinsured boaters
  • Roadside assistance

If you decide to stick with your home owners policy, check to see if the size and max speed of your boat are covered. Often strict limits will make additional boat insurance a necessity.

I have an old boat that isn't worth very much. Should I still insure it?

Boat insurance covers more than just the boat, so it might be important to have a policy just in case you get in an accident with another boater (who could own a yacht). If it's determined that you're at fault, your liability insurance could cover at least some of what would have been your out-of-pocket expenses.

In addition to physical damage, a reliable boat insurance policy provides coverage for:

  • Personal possessions onboard the boat
  • Pets out on the water with you
  • Injuries that occur on or while boarding the boat
  • Liability for any fuel or oil spills
  • Your boat trailer
