DriveSense ® App Basics

How does the DriveSense app work?

The DriveSense app is a tool designed to help you drive more safely. It automatically detects when your car's in motion and logs details which are important to your safety:

These factors combine to create a figure that we call your driving wellness .

DriveSense only registers trips that are at least 1 mile long, 5 minutes in duration, and where you reach at least 20 mph. It can take a few minutes for the app to register the start and finish of a trip. So, for example, if you move your car from your driveway to the street, it likely won't register.

To make sure your phone is properly set up to log trips, please visit the App Diagnostics page, accessible from the bottom navigation bar in the app. If your battery is low, DriveSense will stop tracking until you regain charge.

How do I get a discount from DriveSense?

The main concept is that the safer you drive, the more you can save on your policy.

We provide an automatic discount in the first term, just for signing up. In subsequent terms, you must log 50 trips to remain eligible for the discount. If you have multiple drivers enrolled in the program, the more drivers who log 50 trips, the greater your total discount can be.

Your discount percentage is calculated independently each term. Percentages from previous terms don't carry over.

Do I need to open the app each time I drive?

No. The app automatically detects when your car's in motion and will start and end your trip.

What happens when I'm not driving?

DriveSense automatically detects different kinds of motion. If you're not driving, but a trip is still logged, feel free to remove it. You can do this by swiping on the trip in your log or using the trash can icon on the trip details page.

You will be prompted to give a reason for deleting the trip. You may indicate that you were a passenger while someone else was driving, or that you were using alternate modes of transportation, like bus or train.

Will my privacy be maintained?

We protect your driving data with the same rigor we apply to protecting all of your info. For information on the data the DriveSense app collects, please visit our terms of use . Also, check out our privacy policy to learn more about our commitment to maintaining the privacy and security of your personal information.

Troubleshooting

The app isn't tracking my trips. How do I fix this?

First, please don't delete and reinstall the app. If you do, all the trips you've logged will be deleted as well.

Second, make sure you have the most recent version of the DriveSense app. Depending on your phone's settings, this may happen automatically. Otherwise, you can check for available updates in your phone's app store.

Third, visit the App Diagnostics page (accessible from the bottom navigation bar in the app) to verify everything is working properly. If you need to resolve any outstanding issues, please do so. If everything looks normal, your trip may not have tracked due to low battery or a poor cellular data signal. Sometimes, fully closing/exiting the DriveSense app and then opening it back up will help resolve any issues you're experiencing. (This is different than leaving the app running in the background while you use another app.)

The app logged a speeding or hard braking event unfairly. How do I fix this?

We built this app to encourage the safety and awareness of your driving relative to your environment, as accurately as we can. However, the app can't see everything. We don't know if it's raining, if you get cut off, or if everyone is speeding by you on the freeway. You should always drive most safely for the conditions you are in.

If a speeding or hard braking event is logged where you were driving defensively, you may delete that trip so that it doesn't impact your wellness. You can do this by swiping on the trip in your log or using the trash can icon on the trip details page. You will be prompted to give a reason for deleting the trip. It is up to you to monitor this.

I deleted my trip but my wellness hasn't changed. Is something wrong?

Depending on when you delete the trip, it may take until the following week for you to notice a change in your wellness. Please allow a week, and if you still see no change in your dashboard, let us know.

I was not driving and the app recorded the trip. How do I correct this?

We're always trying to reflect your true driving habits as accurately as possible. However, sometimes the app miscalculates. If you're not driving, but a trip is still logged, feel free to delete it. You can do this by swiping on the trip in your log or using the trash can icon on the trip details page.

You will be prompted to give a reason for deleting the trip. You may indicate that you were a passenger while someone else was driving, or that you were using alternate modes of transportation, like bus or train. It is up to you to monitor this.

If there is a timeframe where you know you won't be driving, you can turn on Standby Mode in the settings page, available via "More" in the bottom navigation bar in the app. Select how many hours or days you'd like for DriveSense to stop monitoring your driving, and it will automatically resume after that timeframe.

I got a new phone. How do I change devices?

Before using the DriveSense app on your new mobile device, please review your trips on your old device and make all necessary adjustments (e.g. deleting trips).

Trips are stored locally on the device which tracked them, so your trip history won't be visible on the new device. However, your trips will still be logged and reviewed on your dashboard. Then, simply download DriveSense on your new phone and activate the app using your email address and mobile phone number.

If you still need help after reviewing these FAQs, send us a message.

More Discount Info

When do I receive my discount?

You'll automatically receive a one-time discount for the first term just for enrolling in DriveSense. After that, your discount percentage will be calculated at each policy renewal based on your driving wellness.

How is driving wellness determined?

Wellness is determined by three main factors, broken out below.

We built this app to help encourage the safety and awareness of your driving relative to your environment. Trips are recorded and weighed over the course of your policy term to determine your discount for the next term.

You won't see your wellness level appear until you've logged 25 trips. We do this to ensure it isn't skewed by limited data, and instead reflects your driving habits over time.

How can I maximize my discount?

Your DriveSense discount is based on your driving. So, the safer you drive, the more you could save. Be sure to log at least 50 trips per policy term, and avoid speeding, hard braking, and driving during risky times to perform best.

Additionally, if you have other drivers on your policy, you could up your savings even more by enrolling them all in DriveSense. The more drivers you enroll, the bigger your discount could be.

Your discount percentage is calculated independently each term. Percentages from previous terms don't carry over.

How do I stop participating in DriveSense?

To stop participating, log into your Esurance policy, go to the 'Edit drivers' page, select 'not enrolled' for each driver you want to remove from DriveSense, and then follow the instructions. Once this has been completed, you can remove the DriveSense app from the mobile device of each driver that was selected to not enroll. Please note that you will no longer receive a discount.
