diversity and inclusion

“At Esurance, ‘diversity and inclusion’ is more than just a concept, more than a political statement, or a soapbox. It’s part of who we are, part of where we’ve come from, and most important, it’s part of what we do.”

~Gary C. Tolman
President and CEO

We deliver on the promise of diversity and inclusion by valuing and respecting the strengths and differences of our associates, policyholders, and partners. Our inclusion challenge is to seek out and use our diversity in ways that bring new and rich perspectives to our jobs and innovation to our business.

It begins with our people

For us, diversity and inclusion begin with the recruiting process. Our goal is to attract and retain people who reflect and understand our diverse customer base. In doing this, we build an organization that seeks out new ideas and perspectives and ensures everyone's skills are fully leveraged.

Once on board, associates are provided with numerous training and workshop opportunities designed to help create a continuously open and accepting environment.

It continues in the workplace

We're committed to providing a workplace environment where creativity and innovation are valued and each person is respected, supported, and rewarded on the basis of individual achievement and contribution.

We also encourage and support numerous volunteering efforts, and our associates play a huge role in our level of community involvement. Their enthusiasm for so many varied causes and concerns reflects not only their uniqueness and commitment, but also inspires us to do more each year.

It comes full circle with our customers

Esurance celebrates the diversity of our workforce and our consumers and takes pride in supporting the communities in which they live and work. After all, a respected and supported workforce is better equipped to provide the skilled and friendly service that our customers have come to expect from us.

By developing an exceptional organization with innovative strategies for identifying new products and services, we're able to meet the needs of our diverse policyholder community more effectively.

Recruiting

Esurance is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to diversity and to providing an environment where each individual is respected and supported. Our culture reflects these values and celebrates the individuals who make up our growing team. We hope that cooperation and teamwork will thrive in this culture, resulting in individuals and the entire organization achieving the highest standards of performance and potential.

Training for associates

Once on board, our associates are given access to a wealth of resources and training materials, including a Diversity and Inclusion Awareness workshop, an in-depth and interactive course aimed at preventing workplace harassment, and The Little Things Mean A Lot™ Workshop, which focuses on how seemingly little things can help make our organization highly productive, creative, and innovative.

Training for managers

Managers are also provided with a range of resources and training designed to help them navigate the ever-changing workplace environment. Part of their training includes The Diversity and Inclusion Awareness Workshop for Managers and Employment Law Boot Camp, both of which are designed to support the development of future leaders.

Matching gifts program

Esurance takes pride in giving back to the community through a variety of charitable programs. The Esurance Matching Gift Program gives associates the opportunity to have donations to their favorite nonprofit organizations matched dollar for dollar by Esurance.

In 2012, a total of 187 associates participated in the program and contributed $85,424, which, of course, we happily matched.

Volunteering initiatives

Through our Give Time/Get Time program, Esurance rewards associates with paid time off for volunteering.

Additionally, when an associate volunteers 8 hours to one organization, Esurance will donate to that organization through Dollars for Doers.

Esurance Grant Program

Through the Esurance Grant Program, associates can vote for local organizations to receive a charitable endowment from Esurance. Winning organizations receive a grant and volunteer support from the company. In 2012, Esurance donated a total of $55,000 to associate-submitted causes.

Domestic partner discounts

At Esurance, we're committed to equality and diversity — qualities we strive to bring to communities across the nation. That's why we offer the married rate to domestic partners and those in civil unions — even in those states that don't recognize either commitment — in every state we can.

Community commitment

As Esurance grows, so does our commitment to giving back to the communities in which we live, work, and play. Each year, Esurance associates donate valuable time to volunteer organizations chosen through the Esurance Grant Program, as well as many others. The causes that benefit from their volunteer efforts are as diverse as Esurance itself and include homelessness, veterans affairs, and the arts.

Urban reforestation

Since we wrote our first policy in 1999, Esurance has been committed to environmentally friendly business practices.

In 2005, we took this initiative a step further and began planting trees in or near our customers' communities to compensate for the paper that's inevitably used in day-to-day office life. Since then, we've planted more than 100,000 trees. A noteworthy accomplishment and one we're proud of.

Our award-winning commitment to diversity

Esurance is featured on the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index for our non-discriminatory practices in the workplace, with our customers, and in our communities.

In addition, Esurance has been recognized as a top place to work by numerous organizations. These awards acknowledge our efforts to create and maintain a workplace where diversity and equality thrive.
