The Sky Is Falling—
Keeping Your Car Safe from Hurricane Debris

If you live in an area that's often hit by hurricanes, chances are, you've had to file an auto insurance claim or two. Floodwater and debris from a hurricane can cause extensive damage to your property, including your car. While your first priority should, of course, be the safety of you and your family, we do have some suggestions on how to keep your car safe during a storm.

When debris attacks
Hurricane floodwater can cause noticeable damage to your car's exterior, but it's the less conspicuous internal damage that can lead to trouble down the road. High water levels can corrode your wiring systems and ruin your engine, so it's wise to have your car thoroughly inspected after the hurricane dies down.

Although water damage is a major concern during a hurricane, damage from debris actually accounts for a higher number of auto insurance claims. With winds traveling anywhere from 100 to 150 miles per hour, it's easy for objects, both big and small, to be knocked down or swept away. Likewise, floodwaters are often laden with debris that can strike anything in its path. Although some damage may be cosmetic only, larger objects, like fallen trees, can cause thousands of dollars in damage, or even total your car.

Protect your car
If a hurricane is headed your way, you should first assess how much time you have to get yourself to safety. If you do have substantial warning before the storm, the best way to protect your car is to get it to higher ground and away from areas that are susceptible to flooding. Keeping your car covered, preferably in a garage, is another good way to shield it from falling debris. If your car must remain outside, make sure it's parked away from trees, poles, or other large objects that could cause harm if knocked down.

If you plan on using your car to evacuate the area, be sure to map out a safe route and stay informed of changing weather conditions. During hurricane season, it's wise to carry emergency supplies in your car and to keep a full tank of gas at all times. If you must drive during a hurricane, always avoid fallen power lines and flooded streets— they're dangerous for you and can cause irreparable damage to your car. Filing a claim
Keeping your car safe in a hurricane will give you one less thing to worry about during a very stressful time. If your car does experience damage from floodwater or debris, Esurance makes it easy to report your claim and start the process of getting you back on the road. Typically, hurricane-related damage is covered by comprehensive coverage in your auto insurance policy. However, be sure to call your auto insurance company before you go ahead with the repair or replacement of your car.

And remember, a car can always be replaced— your safety is far more important!
