FAQ: General Auto Insurance Claims Info

What if something is stolen from my car?

If your car has been vandalized and/or items have been stolen, immediately report the theft to the police. If your car has been broken into, most likely you'll find some damage, either to a window or to your lock system. If this is the case, your auto insurance coverage should cover the damage. You can file a claim either online or over the phone by calling 1-800-926-1175.

Items stolen from your car are usually covered under your homeowners or renters insurance. That means you'll also need to file a claim with your homeowners or renters insurance company. When you talk with a claims representative, be prepared to describe your losses in detail. This is easier if you have receipts for the stolen goods, and it helps to have detailed descriptions too. Such preparation usually helps speed up the process of filing a claim.

If you want to avoid having to make an auto insurance claim, or any other sort of claim, it's best to avoid keeping valuables in your car. Not sure what your auto insurance will cover?
