FAQ: General Auto Insurance Claims Info

What if something is stolen from my car?

We all tend to think of our cars as bubbles that shield us from the outside world. When we sing along with the radio we like to think people don't notice, and when we leave something valuable on our back seat we like to think no one will touch it. Unfortunately, thieves often break into cars that appear to have valuable items inside. If your car is vandalized or stolen, you'll need to file an auto insurance claim; however, items stolen from your vehicle are usually covered under your homeowners or renters insurance.

If your car has been vandalized and/or items have been stolen, immediately report the theft to the police. If your car has been broken into, most likely you'll find some damage, either to a window or your lock system. If this is the case, your auto insurance coverage should cover the damage. You can file an auto insurance claim with the Esurance Customer Claims Center at 1-800-926-1175.

Because items stolen from your car will likely be handled by your homeowners insurance, you'll also need to file a claim with your homeowners insurance company. When you talk with a claims representative, be prepared to describe your losses in detail. This is easier if you have receipts for, and detailed descriptions of, the stolen goods. Such preparation usually helps speed up the process of filing a claim.

If you want to avoid having to make an auto insurance claim, or any other sort of claim, it's best to avoid keeping valuables in your car. Not sure what your auto insurance will cover? Just call our customer claims center. Our claims counselors are available 24/7 to answer your questions help you file an auto insurance claim.
